Here is a basic list of tools that ALL web surfers should utilize. The more surfing you do, the more at risk you are for picking up nasty viruses and spyware.
There is really no such thing as "safe surfing", only "safeR surfing". If you use Windows, and you have a setup like this, you will eliminate about 98% of problems.
Make sure you keep Windows updated.
Use Internet Explorer 7 if you insist on using Internet Explorer. But, even better, don't use Internet Explorer except for 100% trusted sites (like yahoo, ebay, and other reputable sites).
Instead, use FIREFOX. AND, for extra safeguards, ALWAYS USE THE NO SCRIPT plugin. This will keep websites from being able to run any script at all without your permission.
Avast Antivirus - Absolutely the best (and it's FREE) - Far better than Norton, McAfee, and many other expensive antivirus programs. What Firefox with the No Script plugin can't stop, Avast can.
For a firewall, Windows firewall works great. If you prefer not to use Windows built in firewall, Zone Alarm is recommended. They also have a free version, and it's excellent.
One thing that happens as you surf (and the more you surf, the more it happens) is that you accumulate all kinds of garbage files like cookies and temp files. It won't take long for these files to start bogging down your computer and cause it to run slower than it should.
To avoid this, and to protect your privacy, Surf Secret's Privacy Protector is HIGHLY recommended. Run it as needed (at least once every day or two) and it will thoroughly scrub your system FAR BETTER than you or Windows ever could. (It shreds files beyond the protocol required by the U.S. Dept. of Defense). It's cheap, easy to use, and WELL WORTH the small investment to keep your system running clean AND protect your privacy at the same time.
Amid taking all these precautions, you will RARELY encounter any problems, but should you suspect you may have picked up some spyware, run Ad Aware. For good measure, you may want to run it every week after doing the following:
1. Run SurfSecret to clean up all the garbage files
2. Schedule Avast to run a "boot time scan" (scan your drive upon reboot, so Windows isn't running and tricky viruses can't hide so easily)
3. Once Windows is booted back up again, run Ad Aware just to be sure you don't have any spyware
